How Rock Music Changed Society
Posted by Mike Schumacher
As we already discussed, music has always influenced society. It shapes how people respond to it, both positively and negatively. Some cultures use music as a tool for self-expression, while other cultures use music to express their inner most feelings.
Music can be powerful influence. It is not uncommon to find reports of mass violence or riots following a particular song or group of songs. This effect usually comes down to an individual reacting against the lyrics or statements of the song.
Other times, individuals will identify with a certain element of the song or lyrics and apply that to themselves. For example, someone might feel strong after listening to a specific guitar line.
The impact of music varies widely depending on the culture and listener. What works in one situation may have disastrous effects elsewhere.

Ever since music was first made with sounds being mixed together, people have been trying to figure out how to combine different styles into one piece. We now call this process “mixing” or “collaboration.” Some of the most well known examples of mixing are when musicians collaborate with each other to make an album or play songs together.
A popular way to do this is called songwriting. This is when one musician writes a short story that another artist interprets as lyrics for their song. For instance, someone might write a poem about what it means to be loved, and the person singing these lyrics will use those words in a song!
Another type of collaboration comes from artists incorporating outside sources into their work. A classic example of this is when musicians borrow melodies or riffs from other songs to create new ones.
This article will discuss some more complex instances where artists mix genres and parts of songs to make new songs. These types of collaborations are what we refer to as “rock music.
The rise of the EDM movement
Although rock music has always been considered to be a form of expression, it is not until later in its history that it really starts having an influence on society. It was during the 1960s when artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones began exploring themes that were beyond just simple love songs or stories of personal success.
These musicians wrote about social issues such as racism, capitalism, imperialism, and sexism. Some even made references to politics, like The Beatles’ song About A Girl where they sang, “Give us a call, we’re in trouble now!”
In fact, some claim that John Lennon’s famous quote — “We are all one human being”- comes directly from his experience listening to Pink Floyd’s The Wall album. In the context of the lyrics, he interpreted this truth to mean that everyone else out there is also a part of him, sharing their experiences with him (Lennon). This idea influenced his own philosophy and life approach.
Popular music became more sexual
With songs like “I Want To Make You Crazy,” “Baby I Need Your Love,” and “Thong Song,” artists conveyed messages about sex that are still relevant today. These songs feature lyrics that emphasize eroticism and sexuality — with some even being considered pornographic.
Many people of all ages can relate to these songs and their accompanying messages. They may be young or old, and they may not necessarily agree with every word, but they understand the underlying concept.
The song “I Want To Make You My Wife” is a perfect example of this. The lyric “If you want my hand, then keep your hands out of your pockets” directly correlates with avoiding any kind of intimate touching. This clearly implies staying away from anything romantic.
This isn’t an exaggeration; many teenagers and adults feel uncomfortable when someone makes a too-neon statement about marriage. It’s seen as overly suggestive. Many believe it goes too far.
The influence of social media
Social media has become an integral part of our lives, something that we use to connect with people close to us and get information from the outside world. It is impossible to describe how much it impacts society as a whole.
In his book What Makes A Great Story, Robert McKee says, “A great story touches you in some place deep inside you where no matter what you do you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder at the unfolding of events.”
He goes onto say that stories have helped us understand ourselves and each other for centuries, which makes them one of the most important tools we have as human beings.
Music does this too. It taps into our emotions, creating strong reactions and responses. This effect was not forgotten when music was made available through technology.
Many believe that rock music influenced societal changes more than anything else. Here are the top five reasons why.
Pop culture became more mainstream
After World War II, popular music shifted towards what is now referred to as pop or bubblegum music. This is music that features catchy beats and melodies that people can easily sing along to. Some examples of this are songs like The Beatles’s Hey Baby (da da daaaa), Katy Perry’s Firework, Adele’s Someone Like You, and Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off!
These types of songs feature very common themes and lyrics that appeal to most people. They are typically about love, life, and happiness. These songs are designed to make you feel good so they will usually have a slow rhythm and an uplifting tone.
Some scholars say that these type of songs influence society in two ways. First, they teach us how to be social beings by encouraging singing, dancing, and interacting with other people. Second, they create an overall feeling of joy and happiness which may help improve our mental health.
Songwriting became more important
As music shifted from singing about religious themes to include stories that focused on everyday life, songwriters began incorporating experiences into their songs. These writers now had something to draw upon as they crafted lyrics and melodies. They also learned how to combine catchy tunes with relatable material.
This is what made artists like Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Taylor Swift so popular. People connect with their songs because they relate to the characters in the songs or because the songs discuss issues that affect them.
These musicians have influenced many other artists since then, making it hard to pin down exactly where rock music leaves off and hip hop begins!
Music has always been a powerful tool for changing society. It was never just one style of music that left an impact; it’s all of them together. However, there are some styles that stand out particularly strong due to their influence beyond entertainment.
Rock is one of those genres. Although it’s gone through several different trends over the past 50 years, it still holds up today and even inspires new musical forms. That alone makes it worthy of our attention. Let us look at five ways in which rock changed society.
Artists became brands
As music production technology evolved, so did artists’ strategies for marketing themselves. Technology made it possible to produce and market songs at a much faster rate, which allowed artist to capitalize on their artistic side while also promoting their work. This is what enabled some musicians to gain popularity and keep doing well.
Music has always been a form of expression, but as technology advanced, people found new ways to use it. For example, you can now upload your song onto YouTube and get feedback, exposure and recognition for your talent!
Artists have employed various techniques to promote their products for years. Some hold concerts, make appearances or do interviews, whereas others focus more on using social media to spread their name.
Some even create their own material such as lyrics, melodies or artwork.
Celebrity came to music
As we know, music has always been important in this world. Artists have inspired people for centuries by their songs and voice performances. It seems like every culture has had some sort of song or ritual that sets the stage for community gathering or celebration.
Music was integral to our society’s development. It helped shape cultures across continents, gave rise to new ones, and still influences how people feel about each other today.
But what if I told you that it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that music achieved its next major goal? What if I said that it wouldn’t be until the mid-1990s before most people could name even one musician who changed the way they thought about humanity?
What if I mentioned that it would take another decade after that for anyone under 30 to remember any musicians at all?
In hindsight, these are signs that something big was happening. And now, with the help of technology and social media, we can really see just how much effect rock music has had on civilization as we know it.
It’s time to talk about why rock is so special.
